Understanding the artisanal mining of the pissy granite quarry using the Problem-in-Context framework (PiC)
Michelline Marie Regina Kansole, Moussa Compaore, Anselme Bagoro, Maryam Tamboura, Kpiebote Palenfo, Seta NabaThe Pissy granite quarry of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso exists since 2006, and it is a source of financial incomes for many poor families working there. The Problem-In-Context framework (PiC), lead the current study to understand better the quarry exploitation and structuration. Different motivations guide the quarry actors. Through those motivations, different solutions were suggested, mainly the shutdown of the quarry as the best way to decrease the impacts of the quarry exploitation on the environment, particularly regarding the air pollution and the loss of biodiversity in the area. The Pissy granite quarry is not recognized by the country’s legislation and this study is presenting the site organization. They are three main actors on the site and the tertiary actors are the ones having more incomes comparing to the primary and secondary actors of the chain. There is a need to evaluat...

Artisanal Gold Mining and Environment Pollution: A Comprehensive Assessment of the Sao Mining Area, Burkina Faso
KANSOLE Michelline Marie Regina, NIKIEMA Mahamadi, KABORE IdaArtisanal gold mining plays a significant socio-economic role in Burkina Faso but is associated with
considerable environmental and health risks, particularly related to water contamination. This study assesses
the impact of artisanal mining activities on the environment at the Sao artisanal mining site. A field-based
methodological approach was adopted, including site observations and surveys.
The results reveal intensive use of hazardous chemicals, notably mercury and cyanide, during gold
extraction and processing. Estimated weekly consumption reached 6.48 kg of mercury and 30 kg of cyanide,
alongside significant quantities of acids and hydrocarbons.
The study highlights the direct link between artisanal mining practices and water resource degradation,
exacerbated by inadequate waste management and lack of regulatory enforcement. These findings
underscore the urgent need for i...

Analysis of Local Production Practices and Evaluation of Tiger Nut Milk “horchata” Consumption in Four Regions of Burkina Faso
Abdouramane Sawadogo, Yérobessor Dabiré, Iliassou Mogmenga, Agbémébia Y. Akakpo, Balamoussa Santara, Mahamadi Nikiema, M. Somda, M. DickoThe production and processing of tiger nut tubers into Tiger Nut Milk (TNM) often overlook Good Hygiene Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices (GHP/GMP) because of the product's rapid perishability. This study aims to evaluate the hygienic and manufacturing practices, as well as the consumption level of TNM produced and sold in Burkina Faso. The study was conducted across four tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) production regions in Burkina Faso: Banfora in Tannounyan, Bobo-Dioulasso in Guiriko, Gaoua in the Djôrô, and Dédougou in Bankui. A survey of 120 female producers and 400 consumers of TNM used Kobo toolbox, Sphinx Plus²-V4.5, and Excel 2016 for analysis. It showed that 95% use small morphotypes, with sugar, salt, and vanilla sugar as key ingredients (90%). Most (70%) use 1-5 kg of tiger nuts, packaged in plastic bags or recycled bottles (100%), sold in shops, food stores, or ma...

Gastrointestinal Bullet Embolism with Spontaneous Expulsion of the Projectile
Bere Bernadette, Ouedraogo Salam, Kabore Moussa, Kambire Jean Luc, Ouedraogo Souleymane, Zongo Paowendtaore Valentin, Ouedraogo Isso, Bandre EmileA 5-year-old girl was admitted with signs of peritonitis following gunshot injury of
the abdomen. At laparotomy, a perforation of 1.5 cm diameter on the greater
curvature of stomach was noted. Intraoperatively the projectile could not be located
and hence gastrorrhaphy was performed. Postoperatively, a plain abdominal
radiograph revealed the presence of a projectile in the abdomen. The patient
resumed intestinal motility with diarrhea on the postoperative day-4. The bullet was
spontaneously expelled during defecation on the postoperative day-7 and the
diarrhea resolved on the postoperative day-11. Gastrointestinal bullet embolism
with spontaneous expulsion of the bullet is a very rare phenomenon.

Ambient PM2. 5 Air Pollution in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: Exposure, Attributable Health Burden, and Economic Cost
Mohamed Beidari, Michelline Marie Regina Kansole, Benjamin BazieAmbient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is among the leading environmental causes of premature death, and the highest population-weighted exposures now sit in rapidly urbanizing cities of sub-Saharan Africa. Ouagadougou combines heavy two-wheeler traffic, household biomass use, unpaved road dust, and recurrent Harmattan dust, yet the resulting health and economic losses have not been quantified. We estimate the mortality, disability, and economic costs attributable to ambient PM2.5 exposure in Ouagadougou, and we evaluate the benefits of meeting World Health Organization (WHO) air-quality targets. Annual PM2.5 concentrations were compiled from ground monitoring and satellite-derived datasets. Disease-specific relative risks came from the integrated exposure response (IER) functions used by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. We computed population attributable fractions, attributab...

paysan.
