Impact of Financial Inclusion on Corruption in WAEMU Countries

The main objective of this research is to examine the impact of financial inclusion on the control of corruption in the countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union. Using annual data over the period 2007 to 2022, it applies the fixed effects method, the random effects estimation method, generalized least squares and the Panel Corrected Standard Errors to assess the impacts of financial inclusion on the control of corruption in the countries of this area. The results show that financial inclusion reduces corruption in the countries of this zone. The results do not conclude that there is a threshold from which financial inclusion would have a negative effect on corruption. It calls for measures to be taken to strengthen access to and use of digital financial services capable of reducing corrupt practices.
