Effect of crop diversification on the rural household’s food security in a context of security crisis: the role of gender

This research evaluates the effect of crop diversification on the food security of rural households in Burkina Faso, questioning the specific role of gender. Based on the sustainable
livelihoods approach, an ordered logit model is estimated using data of the 2023 Burkina Faso Agricultural permanent survey. The results show that crop diversification is positively
associated with farming households’ food security. Also, male-headed households are more food-secure than female-headed ones. These results suggest that the government could
introduce policies to encourage crop diversification and the practice of other nonagricultural income-generating activities within households.
