Résumé
Background: Rural populations in sub-Saharan of Africa heavily depend on natural resources for their social and economic well-being. Endogenous knowledge capitalized on plants may vary from one society to another, and the sharing of this local knowledge about this species will contribute to its development and conservation. This study aims to understand the uses, availability and local conservation strategies of Canarium schweinfurthii. Methods: The study was conducted in the rural administrative centres of the municipality of three rural communes in the Cascade Region where the presence of the species is effective in agrosystems. A survey to decline the objectives of the study, identify tree owners and determined the size of the population to be investigated in each community. A semi-structured survey and focus groups were conducted among 174 informants. The important uses of C. schweinfurthii based on sociodemographic factors, local perception of species availability and local conservation strategies were key contents of this study. The R studio software version 3.5.1 was used to perform multivariate analyses (GLM) at the 5% threshold to examine variations in use values based on sociodemographic factors. Results: Rural populations know and use C. schweinfurthii for their daily needs. The results identified a total of eleven (11) specific uses grouped into eight (8) categories of uses among which food use was mentioned by all ethnic groups in the study area. Endogenous knowledge of uses of the species varies according to sociodemographic factors. The reasons for the preservation of the species are various and the local perception of its availability differs according to ethnic groups. Conclusion: The results obtained on the uses, availability and local preservation strategies of C. schweinfurthii provide an useful database for its better management and conservation and for fighting against rural poverty.
