Sexual corruption, informal networks and female entrepreneurship: evidence from Burkina Faso
Doris Aja‐Eke, Robert Gillanders, Roisin Lyons, Idrissa Ouedraogo, Windkouni Haoua Eugénie Maïga, Zalissa WangaSexual corruption occurs when public officials abuse their power to obtain sex or sexual favours. It is a hugely damaging yet underreported and understudied form of corruption that predominantly affects women and vulnerable people. This paper studies the impacts of sexual corruption on female entrepreneurs. It expands the literature on sexual corruption by examining how female entrepreneurs who participated in focus group discussions in Burkina Faso view sexual corruption and its impacts, and how they protect themselves. With the utilisation of an inductive approach, specifically, thematic analysis, we show that sexual corruption is a real and significant threat that female entrepreneurs face. Our findings point to the considerable risks that sexual corruption poses to female entrepreneurs. Predatory male civil servants make sexual demands when women are most desperate and at risk of fin...

Litho-Stratigraphic Refinement of the Precambrian Rocks in the Kampti-Loropeni Greenstone Belt, South-West Burkina Faso (West African Craton)
Mathieu Nanema , Wendkouni Passecdé Pauline Zongo, Adama Ouédraogo Yaméogo , Urbain Wenmenga, Yao Honoré KoffiThe Kampti-Loropeni greenstone belt (KLB) in south-west Burkina Faso forms part of the paleoproterozoic Baoulé-Mossi domain of the West African Craton. Its lithostratigraphic chronology and magmatic sources remain insufficiently constrained. This study integrates field observations, petrography, whole-rock and trace element geochemistry, whole-rock Sm-Nd isotopes and zircon U-Pb geochronology to refine the timing and petrogenesis of the KLB suite. The KLB records a bimodal magmatic succession that comprises tholeiitic
basaltic rocks in the lower sequence and subordinate cal-alkaline andesite rocks together with tonalitic to potassic granitoids. The tholeiitic rocks display broadly flat REE patterns comparable to N-MORB like island arc composition, with slight negative εNd values at 2.2 Ga (−1.2 to −0.22) indicating a primary magma source from or in interaction with an older reworked cr...

Hybrid Feature Selection with a Meta-learner for Explainable IoT Intrusion Detection
Alphonse Sanou, Moustapha Bikienga, Poulmanogo Illy, Frédéric Tounwendnyam OuedraogoThe heterogeneity and resource constraints of IoT networks make intrusion detection complex. High dimensionality, significant class imbalance, and a lack of model interpretability challenge the deployment of effective IDS models. This paper proposes a hybrid feature selection framework driven by a supervised meta-learner that aggregates six complementary selectors: symmetric uncertainty, Pearson correlation, ReliefF, Boruta, RFE with XGBoost, and mRMR. We evaluate our approach on three public IoT datasets (RT-IoT2022, IoT-23, and CICIoT2023) with diverse characteristics, comparing three meta-learners (Random Forest, LightGBM, and Logistic Regression). The framework achieves significant dimensionality reduction: on RT-IoT2022, Random Forest reduces features from 89 to 24 (73.0%) while maintaining a Macro F1 of 0.9908, surpassing the full feature set (0.9899). On IoT-23, features are reduc...

How does farmers' income diversification beyond agriculture affect food security in rural Burkina Faso?
Salamata Bougma, Zié Ballo, Eugenie MaigaPurpose This study analyzes the effect of participation in non-farm activities (NFAs) on the food security of farming households in rural areas. These households face major challenges in increasing agricultural production and income, leading to a deterioration in their food security. Design/methodology/approach The endogenous switching model is used to analyze the impact of NFAs participation on the multidimensional food security index, based on data from the 2017 rural household living conditions survey in Burkina Faso. Findings Statistical analysis shows that approximately 48.39% of households participate in NFAs, with 86.7% self-employed. The food security index was higher for participants (0.38) than for non-participants (−0.35). In addition, 40% of participating households were food secure, compared with 28% among non-participants. Endogenous switching regression results indicate th...

Litho-structural characters of the Birimian belt of Banfora (Burkina Faso-West Africa)
Abdoulaye Ouédraogo, Adama Ouédraogo Yaméogo, Saga Sawadogo, Seta NabaThe Banfora volcano-sedimentary belt is located in western Burkina Faso within the Léo-Man Shield of the West African Craton. It is characterized by lithological and structural diversity. Petrographic studies have identified, (i) volcanic rocks (andesites, basalts and volcanoclastites), (ii) metasedimentary rocks (argillites, siltstones, shales), (iii) felsic rocks (rhyolites, rhyodacites, dacites), (iv) basic and ultrabasic rocks (gabbro, pyroxenites) and (v) intrusive granitic rocks (granites, monzodiorites, granodiorites, quartz monzonites). The
structural analysis obtained from the interpretation of the geophysical data coupled with those of the field indicates a polyphase deformation regime associated with a regional shortening of E-W to ENE-WSW orientation. This structural context has made it possible to identify and confirm the existence of three major phases of deformation (D1,...

Preliminary Result in the Detection of Four Varieties of Mangoes with YOLOv11: Amélie, Kent, Mangot vert, Brooks
Moustapha Bikienga, Sanguirè Pascal Somda, Safiatou Soré, Tounwendyam Frédéric Ouédraogo, Corneille DraboThe automatic detection of mango varieties using YOLOv11 was explored in order to evaluate the performance of this deep learning model in an agricultural context in Burkina Faso. The study focused on four representative varieties: Brooks(Retard), Mangot vert, Amélie, and Kent. Average Precision (AP) was chosen as the main metric, since it combines both precision and recall, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the model’s detection and classification ability.
The results reveal a high AP for Brooks(Retard) (73.6%) and Mangot vert (71.13%), indicating effective differentiation of these varieties, which display distinctive visual characteristics. In contrast, distinguishing between Amélie (70.9%) and Kent (64.4%) remains more challenging due to their strong morphological and chromatic similarity, which leads to greater confusion during classification.
Overall evaluation indicates a mA...
