Résumé
This study aims to provide a description and analysis of environmental and climatic risk factors linked to the spatio-temporal distribution of meningitis cases in the Boucle du Mouhoun Region, Burkina Faso. The methodological approach integrates meningitis nosology data aggregated at the municipal level, climatic data from meteorological stations and environmental data acquired by the remote sensing approach.Estimation of the association between geographic variations in the incidence of meningitis and those in exposure variables uses ecological regression models. Meningitis cases are almost non-existent for relative humidity above 70%. A seasonal distribution of cases is observed, with an increase of 17.07% in the number of cases from the dry and cold season to the dry and hot season, a decrease of 51.23% int he wet and hot season. The spatial structure of environmental variables shows an heterogeneous distribution, with aggregations of spatial units in areas with similar environmental characteristics and spatially atypical cases. The regression coefficients rho= 33.39%, beta= −31.07 estimated for the explanatory variable "humidity" and a total impact of −17.828 for temperatures, reveal a spatial dependence in the distribution of incidences and a significant impact of temperatures and humidity on the heterogeneity of the incidences of meningitis.
